Begin your sponsorship journey!

“My sponsor’s name is Mia. Thanks to sponsors like her, now we have a new school yard and a new restroom with clean water.” Thi Day, 9, Krong Bong, Vietnam

As soon as you sign up, you’ll be starting a special friendship with a girl or a boy from one of the poorest countries of the world (most likely from a rural community in Vietnam, Nepal, Kenya or Uganda) —a friendship you’ll treasure forever. You’ll receive a welcome pack with a photo of the child you’re sponsoring and their story so far.

You’ll get two messages a year from your child – they might be letters, drawings, or postcards! And you will receive photos and updates as they grow up, so that each step of the way, you can see the incredible difference you’re making in their community – improving access to food, water, education, healthcare and the opportunity to earn a living.

Your sponsorship can help the whole community to become self-sufficient providing a viable route out of poverty.

Child sponsorship during coronavirus

Our child sponsorship programme is even more vital now during the Covid-19 pandemic. The lockdowns globally have led to an increase in child marriage and school dropouts, as well as an urgent need for clean water, food and better sanitation in some areas.

72% of the donations* we receive directly fund vital long-term work in the sponsored child’s community (whilst 28% is kept in Ireland for campaigning for structural changes to end poverty, raising awareness and encouraging others to become child sponsors)

*We may use part of your donations to respond to the devastating impact of coronavirus in the country where you sponsor a child. We urgently need more sponsors to help us reach more children.

ActionAid in Vietnam

Vietnam is now one of the fastest-growing economies in south-east Asia. Despite this, most people live in poverty and struggle to support themselves. Poverty is worst in the rural areas of the northern and central highlands where most of Vietnam’s 53 ethnic minorities live. They face harsh climatic conditions, such as drought and flooding, which often make life extremely difficult.

While there are some health clinics in rural areas, many just don’t have enough resources – the lack of clean water, medicines and health professionals increases every day. People are forced to drink contaminated water and many suffer from water-borne diseases like cholera as the coronavirus spreads across the country.

A limited number of schools in rural areas means few children get an education. Even those living near a schoolhouse often can’t attend school because their families are too poor to provide the paper, pencils and books needed.

Despite the many problems that Vietnamese people face, there is hope. ActionAid has been working with local people to resolve these issues and bring lasting improvements to the lives of children, families and communities in Vietnam.
